I was in the middle of doing my homework from school, and I got really tired of it. Then, I decided to look into my kitchen to see what I could make. I had almost NOTHING in my kitchen: no vanilla extract, no baking powder, no brown sugar. I really could've gone to a supermarket to get everything I needed, but I was too lazy to do that, too. So searched my kitchen cabinets and found some bread flour -doughnuts!
Most of the doughnuts sold in supermarkets or coffee shops are coated with a thick colourful layer of sugar glaze or icing then decorated with some sprinkle on top of them. However, the doughnuts I had as a child was plain doughnut, fresh and hot out of the fryer, and simply covered with a coating of white sugar. Though these doughnuts may not have the fruity flavour that many commercial doughnuts have, the simplicity of sugar coated doughnuts allow you to catch the taste of the plain doughnut itself, which I really love. I'm a vanilla type of girl. Simple, bland, and original are my thing.
This doughnut recipe was, surprisingly, easier than I thought it would be. I'd never made doughnut before in my life, nor have I used a deep frying pan before. (to be honest I don't even own one, but a pot and LOTS of oil will do! )
I made these doughnuts using a relatively small round cookie cutters because that's all I had. For the doughnut holes, I just used the back of a decorating tip. The doughnut holes were really small but also super cute. I actually thought it was just the right size especially for younger children -- literally one bite size. After deep frying them they puffed up and looked kind of like a cake pop.
Fried, sugar coated and cooled! They are ready for packaging! It was funny how my mom was the one who was excited to share these doughnuts with our friends and neighbours. I made 35..36..37.. ha...I lost count. I made probably around 38 small doughnuts, packaged into plastic boxes and sent to our friends. What else are food made for if they are not meant to be share? After all, I wish to see people smiling and happy when they eat the dessert I make. That's what motivates me to make more desserts, too!
